Hair loss or alopecia is becoming a more frequent problem for men and women of all ages. Prevention is always better than cure, so those who have hereditary tendencies towards alopecia should take preventive measures as early as possible. For a better understanding on how alopecia starts, let us look at at the hair growth cycle:

1. The anagen phase or the active growing phase is genetically determined for each person. In this phase, the hair follicle is active and hair keeps growing about 1 cm per month for 2 to 7 years. Around 80-85% of hair follicles are in this phase at any one time.

2. The catagen phase or transitional phase lasts only 1 or 2 weeks. In this phase, the hair follicle shrinks and prepares for the last phase.

3. The telogen phase or resting phase lasts for 1 or 2 months and approximately 10-15% of all hair follicles are going through this phase at any one time. This is the phase when hair falls out and the follicle starts to prepare for a new cycle. Disruption or alopecia occurs when hair follicles that are supposed to enter into the anagen phase again, fail to do so. The hair follicle is responsible for producing hair, so to prevent and treat hair loss, hair-stimulating remedies are needed.

Some remedies can improve blood flow to the hair follicle, and thus stimulate hair-growth and prevent hair loss. Other remedies work by nourishing the hair follicle and providing the necessary elements for hair growth:

1. Banana and vitamin E mask - Bananas are very good as a hair loss remedy, due to their high content of important vitamins and minerals that nourish the scalp and hair follicles. Buy some liquid vitamin E from the pharmacy and mix 2 teaspoons with one crushed banana. Apply the mask to the roots of your hair and keep it on for 15 minutes. Rinse with water and wash your hair with a mild herbal shampoo.

2. Regenerating shampooing - Mix nettle shampoo with 2 crushed garlic cloves and 1 tablespoon of honey. Use the mixture to wash your hair, but leave it on for 15 minutes before you rinse. Garlic improves blood circulation, while honey nourishes the scalp skin, and the nettle shampoo removes any excess oils and regulates sebum production.

3. Egg yolk and rosemary shampoo - Mix 2-3 egg yolk with 4-5 drops of rosemary oil and apply this to your hair. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse with lots of lukewarm water. Don't apply anything else to your hair, since the egg yolks can actually clean your hair. The rosemary oil prevents hair loss, stimulates the hair follicles, and helps the hair grow back stronger and thicker. Use this recipe once a week.

4. Walnut leaves concoction - Walnut leaves have amazing degreasing properties, but they also prevent and treat hair loss. Use a handful of crushed walnut leaves and boil them in one liter (33 fl. oz.) of water for 5 minutes. When the infusion has cooled down, use it to rinse your hair. Repeat the procedure after each wash for 2-3 months, and you will be able to notice that less and less hair will fall out.

5. Horsetail tea - Horsetail is an amazing plant with many curative properties, and it also contains lots of important minerals for hair formation. Most of all, it contains silica, a mineral that is essential for hair, nails, and bones, and that has anti-inflammatory properties. You will need to drink 2-3 cups per day of horsetail tea for 30 days. After that, take a break for a week and then start drinking again horsetail tea for another 30 days. This is a very good remedy for hair loss, and horsetail tea also cleanses and heals the kidneys, and it is beneficial due to its high mineral content. In Chinese medicine, hair loss is associated with poor kidneys functioning, so any kidney tonics will also be beneficial against hair loss. For best results, the treatment should be followed for long term periods of time.

Any hair loss problem can deeply affect a person emotionally, and it can even lead to depression and social isolation. It is important to take some measures once you notice that your hair loss has become too severe. For women with androgenic alopecia, it is well worth looking into hormonal-balancing herbs and treatments.
